A rare sarcoma diagnosis in 2020 changed everything. The fear and unknowns of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy were overwhelming. I quickly realized that while I couldn’t control everything, I could focus on what I could control. This mindset shift didn’t happen overnight, but it helped me navigate the journey ahead.
Connecting with a mentor through Cancer Hope Network became a turning point. His honest sharing of his own story didn’t erase my fear, but it helped me feel less alone. I became more engaged in my care, asked more questions, sought second opinions, and helped shape a treatment plan that felt right for me. One key moment came when I questioned my medical team’s initial treatment recommendation. Engaging in the decision-making process helped me create a plan that felt right for me. The uncertainty wasn’t gone, but it no longer controlled me.
Sharing my experience publicly, first on Facebook, then at work, helped me stay grounded. It wasn’t directed at anyone specific, but it helped me feel connected to my community and less isolated. Sharing my experience also allowed others to support me along the way. After completing chemotherapy, I began sharing more informally at work with colleagues, especially those navigating their own or a loved one’s cancer diagnosis. These conversations gave me a deep sense of fulfillment as I offered insight and support.
This eventually led me to become a mentor with Cancer Hope Network. I understood the value of having someone who had been through it before. Now, I aim to offer that same support, helping others find control in their own journeys, even in the midst of uncertainty.
Mentorship transformed me in ways I hadn’t expected. It reinforced my belief in the power of sharing and support, and I’m now working toward expanding Cancer Hope Network’s offerings to businesses and their employees. By integrating CHN’s services into workplace wellness programs, I hope to ensure that more patients and caregivers can access this life-changing support.
Cancer brings uncertainty, but we have choices in how we face it. Shifting my focus from fear to control wasn’t always easy, and it didn’t erase the doubts, but it helped me reclaim my power. By informing myself, sharing openly, and supporting others, I found strength and purpose. As a mentor and Board member, I hope to inspire others to find their own path forward, knowing that while we can’t control everything, we can control how we approach the road ahead.
